If you are planning a trip to Bethanchowk for its famous sunrise, sunset, mountain trails and sea of clouds, choosing the right place to stay can make a big difference to your experience.
Mount Mahabharat Homestay, Retreat and Farm is our family-run homestay and adventure base in Dhunkharka, Bethanchowk, Kavre. For more than a decade, we have welcomed Nepali travellers, international visitors, trekkers and volunteers who come here to experience the quieter, more natural side of Nepal.
What makes us especially proud is not simply the number of people who have stayed with us, but what they say after leaving.
Across Google, Worldpackers, HelpX, Tripadvisor, Booking.com, Airbnb and other platforms, our homestay, farm and associated outdoor experiences have received 700+ guest reviews and recommendations.
These reviews were not written for our website. They come from real people who stayed, ate, trekked, volunteered, camped and spent time with our family.
Before booking a homestay in a place they have never visited, travellers naturally want to know what previous guests experienced. That is why we prefer to let our guests speak for us.
Review numbers naturally change as new guests visit us, so we encourage travellers to open the links above and read the latest reviews directly on each platform.
Every traveller comes to Bethanchowk for a different reason. Some want to hike before sunrise. Some want to camp above the clouds. Others simply want to leave Kathmandu behind for a night, eat fresh food and wake up somewhere quiet.
After hosting guests for many years, a few things appear again and again in their experiences.
Food is a big part of life at Mount Mahabharat.
We grow seasonal vegetables on our farm and use locally available ingredients whenever possible. Meals are prepared in our home in the traditional Nepali way rather than being treated like standard hotel food.
Depending on the season, guests may find local vegetables, mushrooms, millet-based dishes, pulses, honey and dairy products from the Dhunkharka area on the table.
Some of our guests affectionately describe it as “mother’s hand food”. We think that explains our approach better than any restaurant-style description could.
Mount Mahabharat Homestay is located in Dhunkharka, making it a convenient base for visitors who want to explore the hills and viewpoints around Bethanchowk.
Guests come here for sunrise and sunset hikes, forest walks, mountain views, photography, trekking practice and overnight camping.
When required, we can help arrange a local guide and practical support such as trekking poles, packed food and accommodation.
Weather in the hills changes quickly, and no one can promise a perfect sunrise or sea of clouds every day. But when nature cooperates, waking up to the clouds below the hills can become one of the most memorable parts of a Bethanchowk trip.
Many people want to experience camping in Bethanchowk but do not own a tent, sleeping bag or other camping equipment.
That is why we provide camping support for travellers who want to spend a night closer to the mountaintop.
Depending on the package and location, we can arrange tents, sleeping bags, sleeping mats, drinking water, a local guide and campfire essentials.
We currently organise different styles of camping experiences, including simple overnight camping, retreat-oriented stays for guests who want to disconnect from their devices, and selected camping arrangements with access to charging or connectivity for travellers who need it.
The purpose is simple: you enjoy the mountain experience while we help with the practical side of camping.
Mount Mahabharat is not only a place for tourists.
Over the years, we have welcomed international volunteers through platforms such as Worldpackers and HelpX. Some stay for a short period, while others become part of everyday life around the farm.
Depending on the season and ongoing work, volunteers may help in the garden or greenhouse, assist with farm activities, spend time in the kitchen or participate in other daily activities.
In return, they get something that is difficult to experience from a hotel room: time with a local family and a closer look at everyday rural life in Nepal.
For us, volunteering works best when it is a genuine cultural exchange rather than simply an exchange of work for accommodation.
Not everyone comes to Bethanchowk looking for adventure.
Some guests come because they want somewhere quiet.
Our farm and natural surroundings provide space for yoga, meditation, reading, walking and simply slowing down for a few days. There is no need to fill every hour with an activity.
You can spend the morning walking through the hills, eat a home-cooked meal, help around the farm, sit outside with a cup of tea or do absolutely nothing for a while.
Sometimes that is exactly what people need.
Bethanchowk is also useful for people preparing for longer treks in Nepal.
The hills provide opportunities to practise walking uphill and downhill, carrying a backpack and testing trekking shoes and equipment before heading to higher Himalayan regions.
Visitors interested in preparing for Everest Base Camp, the Annapurna region or another longer route can learn more about our trekking practice in Bethanchowk.
It is not a replacement for proper high-altitude acclimatisation, but it is a practical place to start preparing your body, equipment and expectations before a longer trek.
If you would like to experience Bethanchowk without rushing back the same day, you are welcome to stay at Mount Mahabharat Homestay.
We offer short Bethanchowk stays and camping arrangements for individuals, couples, friends and groups. Depending on the package, your stay can include accommodation, organic home-cooked food, camping, campfire arrangements and local guiding.
Our popular 1-night, 2-day Bethanchowk package starts from Rs. 1,500 per person. Package inclusions and prices can change depending on group size, season and the experience you choose, so please contact us before travelling to confirm the current details.
We could tell you that our food is delicious, our hospitality is warm and Bethanchowk is beautiful. But naturally, we would say that. This is our home.
That is why the experiences of previous guests matter more.
Hundreds of travellers have already shared their own photographs, stories, ratings and experiences across independent travel and volunteering platforms. We encourage you to read them before deciding whether Mount Mahabharat is right for your trip.
Read our latest Google reviews.
Whether you are coming for the sunrise, camping, trekking, organic food, volunteering, yoga or simply a peaceful night away from the city, we would be happy to welcome you to Mount Mahabharat.
Come as a guest, spend some time with us, explore Bethanchowk and decide for yourself what makes this place special.
